AN 11 ROOM FAMILY-RUN SKI LODGE RIGHT ON THE SLOPES OF MADARAO MOUNTAIN RESORT

Madarao Mountain Lodge has operated since 2017. It was newly renovated in 2019 with new shower, guest laundry and toilet facilities and a balcony that looks out over a beautiful forest setting and Madarao Mountain. A second room with private bathroom was installed in 2021. All the main guest rooms in the lodge will be renovated in 2023. We also have ski in ski out apartments available.

Madarao Mountain Lodge is an easy 300 meter walk from the slopes at Madarao Mountain Resort. Madarao is a powder-lovers paradise that was rated by Powderhounds web site as being the best value ski resort in Japan. It is close to Myoko Kogen, Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen resort areas. So it provides a great alternative option to those people wanting to explore the world class ski resorts of Northern Nagano.

At Madarao Mountain Lodge you can stay in Western-style rooms with beds or Japanese-style tatami rooms on futons. There are also two Japanese-style rooms with private en-suite bathroom. The rest of the rooms have a shared Western-style shower room as well as a newly installed private shared bathroom. There are also three great hot springs in close proximity to the lodge for those people who want to try a Japanese-style bath experience.

The lodge has its own restaurant and bar, The Greenhouse Cafe, that provides both Japanese and western-style modern cuisine to both in-house guests and outside customers alike. Try fresh sashimi or sushi, or Australian pub-style favourites such as fish and chips, chicken parmigana or our famous "Mad Cow Burger". We have an espresso coffee machine and use Zentvelds coffee beans from the Byron Bay area of Australia. There is also a range of craft beer, including Baird Brewing`s range from Shizuoka and Caldera and Lost Coast imported from the USA. We also specialize in local sake sourced from traditional sake producers from around Nagano Prefecture and have a range of cocktails. Try our Green Tree Frog or Fuji Fireball!

The lodge has WiFi throughout the building, and Apple TV in the bar and in the three family rooms. We also have a dart board, a PlayStation and a massage chair for guests to kick back and relax. There is a self-serve station in the recreation room where guests can use a fridge, microwave and hot water for preparing light snacks.

Madarao Mountain Lodge also has a range of top quality rental equipment such as powder boards from Never Summer snowboards and powder skis from Harvest that are available at discount rates for in-house guests. All boards and skis are in great condition and selected for high performance in the legendary Madarao powder. In summer we can organise mountain bike rentals, e-bikes, stand up paddle boards and have onsite BBQ facilities.

Madarao Mountain Lodge is run by Mark and Mayuko Stahnke. Mark was originally from Sydney in Australia, but has spent over 15 years living and skiing in Japan and has worked as a ski instructor in Shiga Kogen as well as on ski patrol at Madarao Mountain Resort. Mayuko has spent over 10 years living Australia where she worked as a Sushi Chef and had her own catering business. As well as providing excellent food and service, they can also use their language skills to help assist with connecting people to local services such as discount lift tickets, car rentals, ski and snowboard rental, English ski lessons, tours and transport.

Mark and his "lads" Tom and Hamish, certainly know how to set the mood, with chilled out tunes and "red-hot" bar with a service to rival 5 star restaurants of Tokyo. The lodge is clean and in great condition with "5-star" communal showers that had plenty of hot water and spotless. The lodge is great for individuals, couples and families. Couldn't get a better location on the mountain, with an easy downhill ski to the lifts. This is certainly a lodge I'm looking to revisit soon." Marc

"Being a family run accommodation, we felt like we were coming home each day. The property is comfortable and welcoming and the hosts go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your time there. Breakfast varied each day and was delicious. We also had dinner one night which was very nice. The rooms are large and comfortable and the bathrooms are good. I enjoyed the view from our bedroom window as well as from the living room balcony. Parking is plentiful. While we stayed in summer, this would be an excellent place to stay in winter with quick access to the ski fields." Tina
